In a significant development amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, security forces have reported the surrender of 42 illegal firearms and cartridges across five districts. The weapons, including 17 country-made guns and nine ‘pompi’ mortars, were handed over at various police stations, with a major surrender taking place at the Kaimai police station in Tamenglong district. Officials confirmed that residents of Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, and Tamenglong voluntarily relinquished their arms, marking a crucial step towards restoring law and order in the conflict-hit state.
Alongside the arms surrender, security forces intensified operations against illegal bunkers that had been set up amid the unrest. Five such bunkers, reportedly used by armed groups, were demolished during coordinated raids. Authorities stated that dismantling these structures is essential to curbing violence and ensuring that armed groups do not exploit the ongoing crisis to consolidate power. The operations are part of a broader initiative to disarm communities and prevent further clashes, which have already led to significant loss of life and displacement in the region.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since last year, with multiple factions engaged in sporadic conflicts. Officials have urged more individuals to come forward and surrender weapons as part of the peace process. Meanwhile, security forces remain on high alert, conducting continuous patrols and intelligence-driven operations to prevent further escalation. The government has reiterated its commitment to restoring stability and facilitating dialogue among conflicting groups, emphasizing that disarmament is a critical step toward lasting peace in the state.
