Students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) staged a mass class boycott, protesting against the suspension of 17 students and what they describe as increasing authoritarianism within the university administration. Chanting “Reclaim Jamia,” the students marched to the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) office, submitting a memorandum demanding the revocation of suspensions, withdrawal of disciplinary actions, and an end to administrative intimidation. They also condemned the controversial office memorandums and punitive actions against student expression, calling it an attack on fundamental rights.
The demonstration, marked by students wearing black ribbons in a symbolic gesture of resistance, saw a heavy security presence, with officials refusing to engage meaningfully with the protestors. Initially, only one student was allowed to submit the memorandum, but after persistent demands, four students were permitted to enter, reinforcing the collective spirit of the movement. The students accused the administration of dismissing their concerns, with officials responding vaguely to their demands.
As tensions escalate, students have given the administration a 48-hour ultimatum to address their grievances, warning of intensified protests if their demands remain unmet. The protest follows the controversial detention of several students last week and the public display of their personal details, which sparked widespread criticism. Students assert that their movement is a fight for justice, dignity, and the democratic ethos of Jamia Millia Islamia, vowing to continue resisting administrative suppression.
