Patna: A mild earthquake struck Bihar’s Siwan district on Monday morning, causing brief panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremor, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 8:02 AM IST at a depth of 10 kilometers. The Bihar Disaster Management Department (DMD) confirmed that the tremors were felt in Siwan and its surrounding districts, though no immediate casualties or damage were reported. Many residents rushed out of their homes and workplaces as a precautionary measure.
Eyewitnesses in Siwan described the sudden shaking, which lasted a few seconds, causing temporary anxiety, especially among those in high-rise buildings. Authorities have urged people to remain calm and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks. The DMD has also assured that emergency response teams are on standby, and any reports of structural damage will be assessed promptly. Bihar has witnessed occasional low-intensity earthquakes in recent years, given its proximity to the Himalayan seismic zone. Experts have emphasized the importance of earthquake preparedness, particularly in states prone to tremors.
While Monday’s earthquake did not result in significant damage, officials have reminded residents to stay vigilant. The government has also encouraged people to install earthquake alert apps and follow safety guidelines issued by disaster management authorities. Scientists continue to monitor seismic activity in the region, and residents are advised to report any unusual land shifts or structural cracks to local authorities.
