Prayagraj: With the Kalpvas tradition of the Maha Kumbh set to conclude on Maghi Purnima (February 12, 2025), authorities have announced that the entire Maha Kumbh district will be a ‘No Vehicle Zone’ from 5 p.m. on February 11 until February 12. This decision comes as Prayagraj struggles to manage the overwhelming influx of devotees, leading to massive traffic jams along key routes to the holy site. Officials have designated specific parking zones outside the main pilgrimage area to accommodate the surge in visitors. Prashant Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, stated that the sheer volume of pilgrims—rather than any mismanagement—has pushed the city’s infrastructure beyond its limits, making delays inevitable.
This year, over 10 lakh devotees have participated in Kalpvas at the Triveni Sangam, a sacred confluence where they observe a month-long period of fasting, self-restraint, and spiritual discourse from Paush Purnima to Magh Purnima. The Uttar Pradesh government has been working to ensure a smooth experience for pilgrims despite the logistical challenges posed by the unprecedented crowd. To minimize disruptions, authorities have restricted vehicle movement within the Maha Kumbh area, encouraging devotees to use shuttle services and walk to their destinations. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have been deployed across the district to manage the crowd and maintain order, ensuring that pilgrims can complete their religious rituals without unnecessary hindrances.
Amid concerns about railway operations due to the increased footfall, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw reassured travelers that all train services in Prayagraj are running normally. He urged the public not to believe in misinformation regarding station closures. As the Maha Kumbh enters its final phase, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring that essential services, including healthcare and sanitation, remain operational despite the heavy rush. With the culmination of Kalpvas, officials anticipate an even greater surge in devotees on Maghi Purnima, marking a significant spiritual milestone in one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
