External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s stance on the “legitimate return” of undocumented Indian immigrants during a press conference on Wednesday. He emphasized India’s commitment to supporting legal mobility and opposing illegal migration, stating, “We want Indian talent to thrive globally, but we do not condone illegal migration.” The minister highlighted the government’s efforts to verify the status of Indians facing deportation from the United States under President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration policies. However, he noted that no final numbers have been determined yet.
India has consistently engaged in dialogue with the US and other nations, encouraging undocumented Indians to return through proper channels. Jaishankar also acknowledged concerns over how illegal migration damages the country’s reputation and connects to other unlawful activities. He pointed out that India’s approach to immigration remains principled and consistent, even amidst debates and sensitivities surrounding the issue in the US.
During bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar raised concerns over visa delays, which he believes are detrimental to fostering stronger ties between the two nations. He stressed that reducing visa backlogs and facilitating smoother mobility would be mutually beneficial. “If it takes 400-odd days to get a visa, the relationship isn’t well served,” he added, urging for effective solutions to support legitimate immigration pathways.
