JD(U)’s Stand on Manipur’s NDA Alliance Sparks Controversy

The JD(U) in Manipur remains embroiled in confusion over its alliance with the BJP-led NDA government. While state president Ksh Biren Singh wrote to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla reiterating the party’s non-support for the government, the central leadership and sources close to lone JD(U) MLA Md Abdul Nasir denied any withdrawal of support. Singh’s letter emphasized treating Nasir as an Opposition MLA in the Assembly, a stance reflected in past sessions. However, Nasir’s aides stated he has not formally withdrawn support and plans to clarify the matter during his visit to Delhi.

The party’s national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad dismissed rumors about internal dissent, stating that Ksh Biren Singh had been removed for indiscipline and that JD(U) remains a committed NDA ally. This development follows months of turbulence, including the National People’s Party withdrawing support over ethnic violence in Manipur. JD(U) had initially secured six seats in the 2022 elections, but five MLAs defected to the BJP after Nitish Kumar exited the NDA that year.

The current uncertainty highlights tensions between JD(U)’s state and central leaderships. While the Manipur unit claims to provide issue-based support, it now questions the government’s ability to restore peace in the state. This stance marks a critical moment in the JD(U)’s role within the NDA as political alignments continue to shift.
