Kerala Woman Sentenced to Death for Poisoning BoyfriendIn a high-profile case, a court in Kerala has sentenced a 24-year-old woman, Greeshma, to death for the murder of her boyfriend, Sharon Raj. The crime, committed in 2022, involved poisoning Raj with a lethal herbicide mixed into an ayurvedic tonic. Greeshma’s uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, who was also implicated in the case, was sentenced to three years in prison for destroying evidence, while her mother was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. The court dismissed Greeshma’s plea for leniency, citing her academic background and lack of prior criminal history, and instead highlighted the calculated nature of her actions, terming the case as falling under the “rarest of rare” category.

According to the prosecution, Greeshma meticulously planned the murder after Sharon refused to end their relationship, even as her family had arranged her marriage to another man. On October 14, 2022, Greeshma lured Sharon to her home in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, and gave him the poisoned drink. Sharon succumbed to multiple organ failure 11 days later. Evidence revealed that Greeshma had researched slow poisoning and the use of paraquat, a herbicide that becomes difficult to trace after 24 hours. Despite her efforts to mislead investigators, scientific evidence linked her to the crime, leading to her conviction.

The victim’s family expressed satisfaction with the judgment, describing it as a victory for justice. Public Prosecutor V S Vineeth Kumar and law enforcement officials involved in the case emphasized the significance of the verdict in deterring such premeditated crimes. The police credited the successful investigation to their scientific methods and collective efforts, despite the challenges faced. The judgment serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of crimes rooted in betrayal and premeditation, reinforcing the principle that no individual is above the law.
