A court in Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a 25-year-old Muslim man, Mohammed Aalim Ahmed, to life imprisonment for allegedly forcing a Hindu woman to convert to Islam and marrying her under a Hindu identity. Ahmed’s father, Sabir Alam, was also sentenced to two years in prison, and both were fined Rs 1 lakh. This verdict marks the first conviction under the Uttar Pradesh Unlawful Conversion of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2024.
The case began when the 20-year-old woman filed a complaint in May last year, stating that Ahmed had coerced her into marriage, raped her multiple times, and blackmailed her. The court observed that this was a clear case of ‘love jihad,’ a conspiracy theory alleging that Muslim men strategically entrap non-Muslim women to convert them to Islam.
