Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has escalated his legal battle by filing a special leave petition with the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a high-profile corruption case linked to an alleged liquor policy scam.
The petition contests the Delhi High Court’s decision on August 5, which had dismissed Kejriwal’s plea against the CBI’s arrest and subsequent judicial remand. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi urgently presented the case before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who advised sending an email to the court registry for further examination.In its ruling, the Delhi High Court, led by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, found no grounds to deem the arrest unjustifiable or illegal. The court has yet to issue a decision on Kejriwal’s bail plea, which remains pending after being reserved on July 29. On that same day, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Kejriwal and other accused in the special court.Previously, on July 12, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail in a related money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, his release was thwarted when the CBI arrested him, leading to his continued detention.A Delhi court has since extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until August 20 in the excise policy case.
