ISRO Selects Shubhanshu Shukla for US Mission to Space Station

New Delhi, August 3, 2024: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced that Shubhanshu Shukla, a distinguished space scientist, has been selected for an upcoming mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in collaboration with NASA. This marks a significant milestone in India’s growing presence in international space exploration.

Shukla, who has an extensive background in aerospace engineering and has been with ISRO for over a decade, will be part of a multinational team that will conduct a series of experiments aboard the ISS. These experiments aim to advance scientific understanding in areas such as microgravity, space biology, and material sciences.

Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, expressed his pride in Shukla’s selection. “This is a proud moment for India and ISRO. Shubhanshu Shukla’s expertise and dedication have been exemplary, and his participation in this mission underscores the global recognition of India’s capabilities in space research,” he said.

The mission, scheduled for launch in early 2025, will see Shukla undergo rigorous training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he will prepare for the unique challenges of living and working in space. This collaboration is part of a broader initiative to strengthen international partnerships in space exploration and to leverage shared knowledge and resources for mutual benefit.

Shukla’s inclusion in the mission is expected to inspire a new generation of Indian scientists and engineers. He stated, “I am honored to represent India in this prestigious mission. This opportunity not only highlights our achievements in space technology but also opens new avenues for scientific discovery and international cooperation.”

The mission to the ISS will involve a variety of experiments designed to enhance our understanding of long-duration spaceflight’s effects on the human body, as well as to develop new technologies for future space exploration.

As India continues to expand its horizons in space, Shubhanshu Shukla’s participation in the ISS mission stands as a testament to the nation’s growing influence and ambition in the global space community. Further details about the mission and its objectives will be shared as the launch date approaches.
