Mumbai: In a tragic incident this morning, a speeding BMW crashed into a scooter in Mumbai’s Worli area, leading to the death of a woman. Police have identified the driver as Mihir Shah, the 24-year-old son of Rajesh Shah, a senior leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Authorities suspect Mihir Shah, who is currently on the run, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. His blood test results are pending.
The incident occurred when Mihir Shah, returning from a bar in Juhu, decided to drive his BMW after instructing his driver to take him on a long drive. While in Worli, Mihir took over the wheel and soon after, the high-speed vehicle collided with a scooter carrying Kaveri Nakva and her husband Pradik Nakva. The couple, fish-sellers from Worli’s Koliwada area, were returning from Sassoon Dock. The collision was so severe that both were thrown into the air and landed on the car’s bonnet. As the car continued to speed, Kaveri Nakva was run over. She was later declared dead at the hospital, while her husband suffered minor injuries.
The police have registered a case under the new criminal code Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and destruction of evidence. Provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act have also been applied. The vehicle involved in the accident is registered in Mihir Shah’s name. Rajesh Shah and his driver, Rajendra Singh Bijawat, are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
