The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from Madhya Pradesh. The announcement comes just days after the party chose not to renominate him from Uttar Pradesh, where his current Rajya Sabha term is set to end on November 25. With the BJP holding a comfortable majority in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Puri is widely expected to secure an easy victory in the bypoll scheduled for November 12, ensuring his continuation in Parliament.
The Rajya Sabha by-election became necessary after L. Murugan resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the Union Council of Ministers on October 14. Murugan, who served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information & Broadcasting, stepped down stating that he wanted to dedicate his efforts to strengthening the BJP’s organisation in Tamil Nadu. Although his Rajya Sabha tenure was originally scheduled to continue until April 2030, his resignation created a vacancy that the BJP has now moved quickly to fill by selecting Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate.
Hardeep Singh Puri, a veteran diplomat and senior BJP leader, first entered the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in January 2018, replacing former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The party’s decision to field him from Madhya Pradesh instead of Uttar Pradesh is being viewed as a strategic move to retain an experienced Union minister in the Upper House. As Rajya Sabha members are elected by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and the BJP enjoys a strong majority in Madhya Pradesh, Puri’s election is expected to be a formality, with counting scheduled to take place immediately after voting on November 12.
