Cyclone Arnab Wreaks Havoc in Andhra: Falling Tree and Live Wires Claim 3 Lives

Cyclone Arnab caused widespread destruction after making landfall near Narsapur on the Andhra Pradesh coast, bringing torrential rainfall, powerful winds, flooding, and large-scale disruption across several districts. At least three people have lost their lives in cyclone-related incidents, while more than 57,000 residents have been evacuated to relief camps as a precaution. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, electricity poles collapsed, roads were blocked, and waterlogging affected several towns, especially in Visakhapatnam, Konaseema, Kakinada, and West Godavari. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has requested the Union Government to send a central team to assess the damage and provide additional assistance for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The cyclone has severely affected agriculture and public infrastructure across the state. According to the government’s preliminary assessment, over 80,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged, including around 70,900 hectares of paddy fields and 10,450 hectares of horticultural crops. Nearly 180 houses have suffered damage, while dozens of roads, power lines, and public facilities have been impacted. Air travel was also heavily disrupted, with 38 flights cancelled at Visakhapatnam Airport and 17 services suspended at Vijayawada Airport. Several train services were cancelled or diverted as authorities worked to restore transportation, electricity, and water supply in the worst-affected regions.

Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that Cyclone Arnab has weakened after landfall, authorities continue to warn of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and strong winds over the next 24 to 36 hours. Flash flood alerts remain in force across 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh, while parts of Telangana and Odisha are also expected to experience intense rainfall due to the system. Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded and low-lying areas, and strictly follow official advisories until weather conditions improve. Emergency teams remain deployed across the affected districts as restoration and rescue operations continue.
