US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Begins Three-Day India Visit, Holds Key Talks with Jaishankar

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday for a three-day official visit to India, marking an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. During his visit, Rubio is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on a wide range of issues, including trade, energy, security, technology and Indo-Pacific cooperation. He was welcomed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and was later joined by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for a visit to the Gateway of India. Rubio is also expected to attend the “Freedom 250 Reception” at the Jio World Convention Centre before travelling to Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Wednesday.

One of the major highlights of Rubio’s visit is the ongoing effort to finalise the long-awaited India-US trade agreement. Speaking ahead of his arrival, Rubio said both countries were “very close” to concluding the deal, indicating significant progress in negotiations. He also acknowledged India’s growing energy requirements while discussing possible US sanctions and tariffs related to Russian oil imports, stressing that Washington would carefully assess the economic impact of any future decisions. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Rubio will also pay tribute to victims of terrorism by laying a wreath at the Taj Memorial inside Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel before holding formal bilateral talks with Jaishankar.

Ahead of Rubio’s meetings, Jaishankar also interacted with a visiting US Congressional delegation in Mumbai, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, security and emerging technologies. In a post on social media, the External Affairs Minister said both sides exchanged views on improving the ease of doing business in India and strengthening collaboration across the Indo-Pacific region. Rubio’s visit is expected to further deepen the strategic partnership between India and the United States, with both nations looking to enhance economic cooperation, regional security and long-term diplomatic ties amid evolving global challenges.
