India Raises Concern Over Illinois Temple Attack Plot, US Lawmakers Seek FBI Hate Crime Probe

India has expressed deep concern over the alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Aurora, Illinois, urging the United States to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the incident reflects the growing number of hate crimes and racial discrimination targeting the Indian community in the US. Authorities arrested a 19-year-old suspect in Palatine after he allegedly attempted to attack the temple on October 11, but the plan failed when the firearm reportedly jammed. The accused has been charged with making a terror threat and unlawful possession of weapons.

The incident has also prompted a strong response from US lawmakers. House India Caucus co-chairs Rich McCormick and Ro Khanna have urged the FBI and the Department of Justice to investigate the case as a possible federal hate crime. They called for a thorough inquiry into whether anyone assisted or encouraged the suspect, either online or offline, and requested enhanced security measures for Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras, and other South Asian places of worship. The lawmakers stressed that every American should be able to practice their faith without fear and urged authorities to treat the case with the seriousness it deserves.

India said the failed attack highlights the increasing concerns over anti-India sentiment and hate-driven violence in the United States. Recent reports cited by US lawmakers point to a rise in hate crimes against South Asian communities and a sharp increase in anti-South Asian content on social media. Several advocacy groups and members of Congress have condemned the alleged plot, calling for strict legal action against those responsible and stronger efforts to protect religious institutions and minority communities across the country.
