The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast five days of heavy monsoon rainfall across Telangana beginning Saturday, September 19, while thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds are expected to affect several parts of the state on Thursday and Friday as well. In view of the changing weather conditions, the department has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and nearly 30 districts, including Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy, Warangal, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

According to IMD data, Telangana has received 536.5 mm of rainfall so far during the southwest monsoon against the seasonal normal of 664.5 mm, registering a deficit of 19 percent. Hanumakonda has recorded the highest rainfall shortage with a 42 percent deficit, while several other districts, including Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jangaon, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Khammam, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, have also reported rainfall deficits exceeding 30 percent. Hyderabad has so far received 432 mm of rainfall compared to its normal of 550.8 mm.

The weather department has also predicted moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in Hyderabad until Sunday, September 20. Weather expert T. Balaji (Telangana Weatherman) has also warned of intense thunderstorms across several parts of Telangana during the night and early morning hours on September 17 and 18, with moderate to heavy rain expected in Hyderabad overnight. Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, monitor weather updates, and plan their travel carefully in view of the forecast and the possibility of waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
