The controversy surrounding Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s proposed visit to the United States has intensified after reports claimed that meetings with US Vice President JD Vance and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani were not included in the itinerary submitted to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for political clearance. According to sources, the omission led to the denial of clearance for the US leg of the visit, while permission for the United Kingdom portion of the tour was granted.
Sources stated that all chief ministers, political leaders, and dignitaries are required to submit a detailed itinerary, including the purpose of their visit and the list of official meetings, before political clearance is granted by the MEA. Officials maintained that the decision was based solely on procedural requirements and not on political considerations. Reports further claimed that the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office had directly communicated with US officials regarding the proposed meetings without routing them through the prescribed clearance process.
In response, the Telangana CMO said the objective of the proposed US visit was to study leading educational institutions and explore collaborations to bring world-class universities, skill development programmes, and academic partnerships to Telangana. The state government maintained that the visit was intended to benefit students and strengthen the education sector. The issue has since sparked a political debate, with further clarification from both the Centre and the Telangana government expected in the coming days.
