Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has achieved a historic milestone by successfully launching Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The mission, named “Mission Aagaman,” lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 12:05 PM on Saturday after a brief delay caused by a planned hold during the countdown. The successful launch marks a major step forward for India’s private space industry and demonstrates the country’s growing capabilities in commercial space technology.
Standing nearly seven storeys tall, the four-stage Vikram-1 rocket is designed using an advanced all-carbon composite structure and is powered by Skyroot’s indigenously developed propulsion systems, including 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid rocket boosters. During its maiden flight, the rocket carried multiple technology demonstration payloads from Indian and international customers, along with Skyroot’s own SCOPE payload, the “Cosmic Bloom” artwork, and a special postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The mission aimed to place these payloads into a 450-kilometre Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with a 60-degree inclination.
The successful completion of Mission Aagaman establishes Skyroot Aerospace as the first private Indian company to place a rocket into orbit, opening a new chapter for the country’s commercial space sector. Named after the father of India’s space programme, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the Vikram-1 launch reflects the rapid growth of private innovation in the Indian space ecosystem. The achievement is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global space launch market while encouraging greater private participation in future satellite launch missions.
