A powerful weather disturbance accompanied by strong winds and a rare funnel-cloud formation caused significant destruction across parts of Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district on Sunday. Residents near the airport area witnessed an unusual rotating column of air during an intense thunderstorm, leading many to describe the phenomenon as a tornado. The storm uprooted trees, damaged infrastructure, and left at least six people injured. Dramatic visuals shared on social media showed swirling winds carrying dust and debris into the air, drawing widespread attention and concern among local residents.
Despite the circulation of videos claiming a tornado had struck the region, meteorological authorities clarified that the event was not officially classified as a tornado. According to experts from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, the phenomenon was likely caused by a strong thunderstorm that developed due to an east-west atmospheric trough located several kilometres above sea level. The resulting convective activity generated powerful updrafts, localized gusty winds, and dust lifting, creating a funnel-like appearance beneath a cumulonimbus cloud. Weather officials explained that the formation was more likely a transient funnel cloud, convective vortex, or dust whirl rather than a full-fledged tornado.
The storm caused extensive damage across several locations in Thoothukudi, including the Vaagaikulam toll plaza, a private amusement park, and infrastructure surrounding the airport. Temporary metal roofing sheets installed as part of airport expansion work were ripped away by the strong winds and reportedly fell on workers and bystanders in the area. Electricity poles were snapped, trees were uprooted, and debris was scattered across roads, disrupting normal life. Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while residents and emergency teams work to restore essential services and clear affected areas.
