Summer Heat Triggers Foul Smell Crisis Around Hussain Sagar Lake

Hyderabad: Rising temperatures in Hyderabad have led to a noticeable increase in foul smell around Hussain Sagar Lake, causing discomfort for commuters and visitors frequenting the area. With mercury levels nearing 40°C, the stench has intensified, particularly along busy stretches such as PVNR Marg (Ranigunj), Necklace Road, Tank Bund, NTR Gardens, and areas near Lumbini Park. The unpleasant odor has become a daily nuisance, especially during peak daytime hours.

According to officials from the Budda Purnima Project Authority (BPPA), the primary reason behind the worsening smell is a thick layer of green algal bloom forming on the lake’s surface due to extreme heat conditions. Higher temperatures accelerate the growth of algae, which in turn depletes oxygen levels in the water and produces a strong, nauseating odor. This seasonal issue tends to worsen during summer, but the current intensity has raised fresh concerns about the lake’s ecological condition and maintenance efforts.

Authorities have initiated bioremediation measures to tackle the problem, including spraying microbial solutions aimed at controlling the algae and reducing odor levels. However, the effectiveness of these short-term solutions remains questionable if underlying pollution and waste inflow into the lake are not addressed. Until a long-term fix is implemented, residents and daily commuters around Hussain Sagar are likely to continue facing this recurring problem every summer.
