Lok Sabha Sees Heated Clash Between Government and Opposition Over Constitution Amendment and Women’s Reservation Implementation

India’s Lok Sabha witnessed intense debate as the government and Opposition locked horns over the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at implementing women’s reservation and delimitation changes. Union ministers including Arjun Ram Meghwal and Amit Shah defended the legislation, arguing that it is necessary to operationalize the long-pending 33% reservation for women in legislatures. Meghwal announced that Lok Sabha seats could be increased by 50%, taking the total strength up to 815, with 272 seats reserved for women, marking a major structural shift in parliamentary representation.

The Bill, formally introduced as the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, also proposes the creation of a delimitation framework to redraw constituencies based on updated population data. While the government insists this is a logical next step following the women’s quota law, Opposition parties strongly disagreed, claiming the move could disturb the federal balance and unfairly redistribute political power among states. Leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi openly criticized the Bill, calling it a violation of the Constitution’s federal structure, while several parties, including DMK members, staged protests inside the House.

Despite strong resistance, the Bill cleared an initial voting phase, with 207 MPs voting in favor and 126 against, highlighting a clear but contested majority. Speaker Om Birla allowed extended debate hours, acknowledging the seriousness of the issue as discussions are expected to continue before final voting. The government maintains that the reforms are essential for inclusive representation, while the Opposition argues that the real intent is political restructuring under the guise of women’s empowerment, making this one of the most politically charged parliamentary battles in recent times.
