Xi Jinping met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of stronger strategic coordination between China and Russia amid rising global tensions. During the meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Xi described the relationship between the two countries as “precious” in an increasingly unstable international environment. He also stressed the need for both nations to protect their shared interests and strengthen unity among developing countries.
The discussions come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and disruptions in global energy supply routes. Although official Chinese statements did not directly mention the conflict, Xi’s remarks reflected concerns over global instability, especially with the situation in the Strait of Hormuz affecting oil and gas transportation. Lavrov indicated that Russia could help offset China’s energy shortages, highlighting deepening economic cooperation between the two countries.
China and Russia, while not formal military allies, continue to maintain close political and economic ties, further strengthened since their “no limits” partnership agreement in 2022. Ahead of his meeting with Xi, Lavrov also held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, focusing on global conflicts including the Ukraine war and Middle East tensions. The visit underscores ongoing efforts by both nations to align their positions on major international issues and present a coordinated response to shifting global dynamics.
