Samrat Choudhary has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar, marking a significant political development in the state. This is the first time that the Bharatiya Janata Party has secured the Chief Minister’s post in Bihar. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Syed Ata Hasnain during a formal ceremony attended by several senior leaders of the National Democratic Alliance, including Chirag Paswan and J. P. Nadda.
The change in leadership follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, who has now become a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He stepped down after dissolving his cabinet, paving the way for a new government formation. Prior to this, Samrat Choudhary served as the Deputy Chief Minister and held the important Home Department, making him a key figure within the party’s state leadership.
In the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly, the BJP is the single largest party with 89 Members of the Legislative Assembly. This numerical strength played a decisive role in Choudhary’s elevation to the top post. Having joined the party in 2017, he steadily rose through the ranks and was unanimously elected as the leader of the legislative party. His leadership will now be tested on governance performance and his ability to maintain stability within the ruling alliance.
