Hyderabad witnessed heavy downpours on Thursday evening, September 18, leading to severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas and causing major traffic disruptions. Commuters struggled through flooded roads, while multiple areas across the city reported power outages and fallen tree branches due to strong winds. The intense rain showers, which lasted for hours, brought normal life to a halt as vehicles moved slowly on submerged stretches, leaving office-goers and late-night travelers stranded in long snarls.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Bahadurpura recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 88.3 mm, while Charminar and Nampally also saw heavy showers of over 70 mm. The continuous rainfall added to the woes of residents, with fresh potholes emerging on already battered city roads, posing risks to two-wheeler riders. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) teams were pressed into service to clear waterlogged junctions and manage traffic flow, but the impact was felt across multiple neighborhoods.
Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rains and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds on Friday and in the coming days. A yellow weather alert has been issued for Hyderabad and surrounding districts, valid until September 22. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious in vulnerable areas. With monsoon activity set to continue, authorities are on alert to address any urban flooding and further disruptions to city life.
